Should I Move to Westchester?

Westchester County is one of the most popular suburbs in the United States. It is known for its picturesque homes, cozy downtowns, and abundance of nature. Whatever the reason you’re drawn to Westchester, you may be thinking – is it the right move for me? Here are some things to think about:

  1. Taxes

While Westchester is known for many things, it is notorious for its taxes. The high property taxes in Westchester add value to infrastructure, local government, and public schools, reasons many people cite for moving to Westchester.

However, if the tax rates are a concern, know there are affordable ways to live in Westchester! Westchester is home to several beautiful condominiums and co-ops, which feature much lower tax rates than single family homes. They can be a great option for many homebuyers.

2. Commuting

There are few places more convenient than Westchester for commuters. Not only is Westchester connected to New York City by the Metro North, making many areas a breezy 30-40 train ride to Grand Central. Westchester is also central to Connecticut, New Jersey, and upstate New York, making it perfect for many commuters and travelers.

3. Local Charm

Westchester’s towns each have their own distinct character; you have to visit them to get to know them! Westchester is home to countless small local businesses, including boutiques, cafes, and restaurants! It is hard not to feel at home as you get to know the story behind each store lining a cozy downtown street.

Westchester is also home to its own history and culture. Learn about Washington Irving at his estate Sunnyside, immerse yourself in the history of the headless horseman, and roam the halls of Lyndhurst. These locations, and many more, are perfect for adventurers and history buffs.

4. Nature

The abundance of nature is another asset Westchester has to offer. No matter where you live, you have easy access to biking trails and hiking trails. Further, Westchester is flanked by the Hudson River on one side and the Long Island Sound on the other, making it an ideal destination in the warmer months.

Whatever your reason for thinking of a move to Westchester, I would be happy to assist you in the process of searching for a home. As a local resident of Westchester who has been in real estate for over 18 years, I would welcome the opportunity to answer your questions about Westchester and serve as a local guide to all the area has to offer.
